Tips for Filling Out Online Job Applications

Print this articleOnline job applications allow you to present yourself to potential employers in the best possible light. Usually, everyone submits the application in the same format. Every applicant stands on equal footing, with an equal shot of impressing the employer. With the right approach, you can set yourself apart from others and keep yourself in the running for the interview that could land you the job you seek.

Prepare

Gather all the personal information you need beforehand. By listing the personal information you need first, you can quickly fill out multiple online applications and increase the chances of landing the job you need. Most applications ask for contact information, such as your name, address, Social Security number and driver's license number. Most request details about your work history, including your previous employers' names, addresses, phone numbers, supervisors' names, job duties and dates you worked there. Enter this information into a document on your computer to simplify the process of filling out your online applications.

Follow Directions

If you fail to follow an employer's directions during the application process, you give him the impression that you will not follow directions on the job either. Only apply online if the company or employer invites you to do so.

Visit the company's "about us" page to find employment information. If the employer offers the option to apply online, you can normally find it here. At a minimum, fill out the required sections completely. If the application requests a specific format for dates and other information, fill it out exactly as requested. Set yourself apart from other candidates by following all instructions to the letter.

Take Your Time

If you rush through the application, you will likely make mistakes that remove you from consideration for the position. Read everything carefully, and type your answers slowly. Online application sometimes prevent you from going backwards, so reread each section before you submit it or move on to the next page. Remember that your online application makes your first impression, and you want to give the impression that details matter to you.

Good Reasons

Many employers request the reason you left your previous jobs on their online applications. Express your reason for leaving each job in a positive way. Say that you left because you received an offer for a better opportunity, sought a more challenging career or something similar.

Answer Honestly

1

Make a list of:

鈥?Former employers and managers

鈥?College professors

鈥?Family friends who have seen you in a professional setting

鈥?Community leaders

2

Choose references that are people who have experience working with you, and are willing to vouch for you. You want to identify individuals who can validate your experience, skills, integrity, professionalism, and team-player attitude to a potential employer.

3

Ask each reference for permission. Make detailed notes of when you contacted each one and what each response was.

Find out from each reference what their preferred means of contact is, whether it is by personal or business phone, or if they would rather be contacted via e-mail.

4

Go over the basics with the individuals who have agreed to be references. Tell them what strengths you are stressing and any other information you can provide to help prepare them for the contact.

5

Routinely ask for a letter of reference from individuals who you have worked with who might be transferred or retiring. Keep a folder for all references and be sure to thank each person who serves in this capacity.
