How soon to follow up after applying for a job?

I applied to a local Subway about a 6 days ago. I live close enough that it will take me less than 5 minutes to just walk in. But should I just go in and ask if the manager's there and follow up on the application? I'm scared of being too pushy or sounding desperate. How soon to follow up after applying for a job?
You should definately follow up 3-7 days after submitting an application. Regardless of their hiring situation, you can make a positive impression on the hiring manager. Be polite and respectful, and smile! If they are hiring, making a good impression will cause the hiring manager to seek your application out of the stack. If they aren't hiring, ask for them to keep you in mind in the future. Ask how long applications are kept on file - this shows that you are interested in THIS job and will follow up later on. Employers want potential employees to be excited about that particular job, not just someone who wants a paycheck from anywhere that will hire them. How soon to follow up after applying for a job?
A week is a long enough time to wait before following up. Are you sure there was a position open at the time? Since you live close-by, can you check if the "help wanted" poster is still on the window?

Instead of stopping by, maybe you should call him/her. :) Good luck!
